Basic Rules of Texas Hold'em
Texas Hold'em is played with blinds and a dealer button. The blinds are two forced bets that are there to initiate play. There is the small and the big blind. The size of the small blind is half the size of the big blind. In a game where there is a dealer who doesn't participate in the game, but only deals cards a dealer button is used to mark the player who would have dealt the cards had no the dealer been there.
Pre-flop
The game starts with the blinds being posted, it is the first two players sitting to the immediate left of the dealer button who posts the blinds. The dealer then gives each player two cards, one card at a time in clockwise. The first betting round begins and every player makes their move until the last player has acted which is the big blind on the first betting round. A player has the usual options of folding, calling and raising. The big blind may choose to check since he or she already opened with a bet before the cards were dealt. On following betting rounds the player on the button is sitting in last position.
The flop
When pre-flop betting is finished the dealer places three cards open on the table, these are called the flop. Betting continues as usual and ends when the last player has acted.
The turn
After the betting round on the flop is finished the dealer places one card face up on the table, this is called the turn card. The third betting round begins and the remaining players make their move.
The river
When the betting round on the turn is completed the dealer place a fifth and last card open on the table. The last betting starts and when all players have made their move the player who acted last shows his or hers cards first. The other players show or fold their cards depending if they have a better hand.
At showdown the best five-card hand (poker hand) wins the pot. A player may combine two, one or none of its hole cards with the five community cards to make the best possible poker hand.
